ART 401 Art: Siena, Italy (8R) June 29–July 28. Open to all art majors. Four-week studio course provides students with a unique opportunity to study and create art within the context of the beautiful medieval city of Siena. The focus of the class is Siena itself—the intersection of cultural history, medieval architecture, public events, tourism, and our shared contemporary experience. Students use a range of media, including photography, video, drawing, painting, and installation to respond to the site of Siena. An intermedia and collaborative approach is encouraged. Extra fee. ART 408/508 Color Theory (3R) June 15–19. Understanding the interaction of color is an essential part of the visual arts. Learn to use color expressively, in composition and in the creation of space, through a series of exercises and projects. Extra fee. Kley.

ART 408/508 Creating Comics (3R) June 15–19. Intensive investigation of comics inspired by everyday lives. Explores single- and multiple-page comic book production including story ideas, panel layout, and research for drawing, inking, and printing. Demonstrations include traditional and nontraditional tools and techniques. Extra fee. Baggs.

ART 408/508 Japanese Papermaking (3R) June 15–19. Traditional Japanese papermaking techniques. Students construct nontraditional Japanese paper molds, cook and hand-beat Kozo fiber, form sheets with hand molds and dry paper. Extra fee. Miller.

ARTS 408/508 Micro to Macro Art (3R) June 15–19. Using sculptural methods, students create three-dimensional artwork informed by the invisible microscopic worlds that surround us.
