FLR 199 Dynamics of Street Art Style (4) July 21–August 15. Explores the dynamic and innovative forms of public street art—graffiti, fliers, stencils, and murals—including their multicultural, worldwide appeal. In-class workshops, films, archival activities, and local projects. Ensminger.

FLR 399 Yoga and Ayurvedic Traditions (2) June 16–June 28. Introduction to the traditional structure of yoga philosophy and methods, using foundational texts from the classical and medieval periods. Emphasis on Ayurvedic folk theory, including asana, traditional massage (with workshops), and the use of bandhas. Liberman.

FLR 410/510 Danger and Music in Cultural Context (4) July 21–August 15. Why do some types of music generate tension, disgust, and distrust between supporters and foes What else can music “do,” and why might these things be considered dangerous by certain people We will examine the relationship between music and danger as the two concepts have been perceived across the globe. Fenn.

FLR 410/510 Folklore and the Supernatural (4) June 23–July 18. Explores supernatural beliefs in modern society as expressed in folklore and film. Topics include apparitions, prophecy, apocalyptic cults, magic, zombies, ghosts, angels, vampires, UFOs, and supernatural assault. Wojcik.

FLR 410/510 Magic, Myth, and Religion (4) June 16–20. Magic as folk belief and practice, myth as sacred expression, and the functions of folk religions and cults. Folklore forms that express belief, e.g., narratives, rituals, celebrations, and customs. Prereq: junior standing. Sherman.

FLR 410/510 Track Town Traditions (2) June 23–July 4. Explores the culture of track and field as expressed through traditions, legends, rituals, beliefs, and humor, with special focus on the town of Eugene’s running-culture heritage. Guest speakers, films, workshops, fieldwork, and observation at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Wojcik.
